Scaling & Polishing

Scaling and polishing are common dental procedures performed by dental hygienists or dentists to maintain good oral hygiene and prevent oral health problems.

Scaling:

dental scaling
  • Purpose: Scaling is the process of removing dental plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the surfaces of the teeth, especially below the gumline and in areas that are difficult to reach with regular brushing and flossing.

  • Tools: Dental scalers or ultrasonic devices are used to carefully scrape away the deposits without causing damage to the tooth enamel.

  • Benefits: Removing plaque and tartar helps prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. It also promotes healthier gums and overall oral health.

Air Polishing:

  • Purpose: Air polishing is a technique that uses a mixture of air, water, and a specially formulated powder to clean and polish the teeth.

  • Tools: A dental air polishing device consists of a handpiece that delivers a controlled stream of air, water, and a fine powder.

  • Benefits: Air polishing is effective in removing surface stains, plaque, and soft deposits. It is less abrasive than traditional polishing methods and can be more comfortable for patients.

Polishing:

  • Purpose: Polishing is the next step after scaling. It involves smoothing and polishing the tooth surfaces to make them resistant to plaque buildup and to create a clean and smooth surface.

  • Tools: A rubber cup attached to a prophy angle is often used, along with a polishing paste that contains a gritty substance to aid in the polishing process.

  • Benefits: Polishing helps in the removal of surface stains, giving the teeth a smoother appearance. Additionally, the smoother surface makes it more difficult for bacteria to adhere to the teeth, contributing to a cleaner and healthier mouth.
