Orthodontic treatment plays a crucial role in enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the oral cavity. This specialized branch of dentistry focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities, commonly involving the alignment of teeth and jaws.

Common Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic treatment addresses a spectrum of dental issues, including crowded or crooked teeth, malocclusions (bite problems), overbites, underbites, and gaps between teeth. These issues, if left untreated, can lead to oral health problems, such as difficulty in chewing, increased risk of dental decay and gum disease, and even facial discomfort.

  1. Traditional Braces: These consist of metal brackets attached to each tooth, connected by wires and secured with elastic bands. They are effective in addressing a wide range of orthodontic issues and have evolved to become more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.

  2. Ceramic Braces: Similar to traditional braces, ceramic braces use tooth-colored or clear brackets, making them less noticeable. This option appeals to individuals who prioritize aesthetics during their orthodontic journey.

  3. Self-ligating or Damon braces: An innovative and advanced approach to orthodontic treatment. These braces utilize a unique sliding-door mechanism, eliminating the need for traditional elastic bands to hold the archwire in place. They are designed to reduce friction and discomfort, often resulting in a more efficient and comfortable orthodontic experience. With their sleek design and focus on gentle tooth movement, Self Ligating or Damon braces offer a modern and effective solution for achieving a beautifully aligned smile.

  4. Clear Aligners / Invisalign : A popular alternative to traditional braces, clear aligners are custom-made. These transparent, removable trays gradually shift your teeth into alignment without the need for traditional bracesBrands like Invisalign have gained popularity for their discreet appearance and flexibility, allowing you to maintain your daily activities with minimal disruption. Experience the freedom of orthodontic treatment without metal brackets and wires, and embark on your journey to a beautifully aligned smile with clear aligners like Invisalign.

Orthodontic Treatment Process

1. Initial Consultation:

  • Examines the patient's teeth, takes X-rays, Extraoral & Intraoral Photograph and  impressions or digital scans of the teeth and jaws.

  • Discusses the patient's dental history, concerns, and goals for orthodontic treatment.

2. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning:

  • Formulates a diagnosis and develops a personalized treatment plan.

  • The treatment plan outlines the specific orthodontic issues to be addressed, the type of appliances to be used, and the expected duration of treatment.

3. Discussion of Treatment Options:

  • Discusses treatment options with the patient, including the choice of braces (metal, ceramic, lingual) or clear aligners.

  • Factors such as aesthetics, comfort, and the severity of the orthodontic issues may influence the decision.

4. Braces Installation or Aligner Fitting:

  • If traditional braces are chosen, proceeds to bond metal or ceramic brackets to the teeth. Wires and, if applicable, elastic bands are then placed to facilitate tooth movement.

  • For invisible aligners, the patient receives a series of custom-made trays that are worn sequentially to gradually move the teeth.

5. Adjustments and Progress Checks:

  • Regular follow-up appointments, usually every 4-6 weeks, for adjustments. During these appointments, may tighten wires, replace bands, or provide new aligner sets.

  • Progress checks to monitor the movement of teeth and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

6. Orthodontic Hygiene and Maintenance:

  • Patients are educated on proper oral hygiene practices during orthodontic treatment. This includes cleaning around braces or aligners to prevent plaque buildup and cavities.

  • Some dietary restrictions may be advised to prevent damage to braces.

7. Completion of Active Treatment:

  • Desired tooth movement has been achieved, the active phase of treatment concludes.

  • For braces, the brackets and wires are removed. For aligners, the patient may transition to the final set of trays.

8. Retention Phase:

  • After active treatment, a retention phase begins to maintain the results. Retainers are often provided to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions.

  • Retainers may be removable or fixed behind the teeth (lingual retainers).

9. Follow-up Appointments:

  • Periodic follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor the stability of the results and the effectiveness of the retention phase.

10. Post-Treatment Care:

  • Patients are advised on long-term oral care practices to ensure the longevity of the results achieved through orthodontic treatment.

  • Follow-up appointments may become less frequent as the patient progresses through the retention phase successfully.
